In the Mystery/Thriller category, the winner is Lethal Voyage (A Mike Stoneman Thriller) by Kevin G. Chapman.
The Kindle Book Award is the third honor for Lethal Voyage, which was also a Finalist (top 5) for the Chanticleer Book Review’s CLUE Award, and a Finalist (top 6) for InD’Tale Magazine’s RONE award. The Kindle Book Award is noteworthy in that it awards best-of-the-year honors in only eight categories. Among all the mysteries, suspense (non-horror) and thrillers, Lethal Voyage was the selection of the Kindle Book Review’s panel of judges as the best of the year.
Lethal Voyage is the third book in Mr. Chapman’s Mike Stoneman Thriller series, which began in 2018 with Righteous Assassin. The series continued with Deadly Enterprise (2019), Lethal Voyage (2020), Fatal Infraction (2021) and the soon-to-be-published Perilous Gambit, which launches on November 24th.
The Mike Stoneman Thriller series features New York City Homicide detective Mike Stoneman and his partner, Jason Dickson. In Lethal Voyage, fresh off a controversial shoot-out in a Brooklyn hotel at the end of Deadly Enterprise, Mike and Jason are directed to take a vacation in order to avoid the prying questions of the New York media. Mike’s girlfriend – and New York County Medical Examiner Michelle McNeill – books them on a cruise to Bermuda. Jason and his recent girlfriend, Rachel Robinson, come along for the impromptu vacation. But what is supposed to be rest and relaxation turns into a murder investigation when a woman they befriend on the first day of the cruise ends up over the side of her stateroom and in the ship’s morgue.
The ship’s chief of security wants to call it a suicide and close the case quickly, to avoid panicking the other passengers by suggesting there is a killer on board. The dead woman’s husband is the obvious suspect, and his alibi proves to be full of holes. When the female cabin attendant servicing the husband’s stateroom is murdered, he becomes more of a suspect – and even the reluctant ship’s security chief can’t deny that the knife in the attendant’s back was no accident. What’s even more puzzling is that the body is discovered in Mike and Michelle’s cabin.
The investigation into the two deaths leads Mike and Jason down some dark paths, while they attempt to still enjoy their Bermuda cruise. In the end, Mike gives a command performance that leaves the audience breathless.
Lethal Voyage is available on Amazon.com for Kindle, in paperback, and in hardcover. The book is also available as an audiobook, narrated by the author, on Audible, CHIRP, Apple books, Google Play, and most other audiobook retailers.
