Lawyering Fellows Program
One of the most important resources available to first-year students are the Lawyering Fellows. Fellows work closely with students on their writing assignments, conferencing with students before the first draft of each assignment and providing other helpful feedback during the writing process. Fellows can also offer general advice on navigating the first year of law school. In addition to giving feedback on student work, Fellows write one substantive assignment each semester. Fellows also assist with professional skills simulations and act as judges during the first-year moot court program.
Training and Supervision
Lawyering Fellows receive individualized guidance and supervision from their assigned Lawyering Skills faculty member. In addition, Lawyering Fellows attend a class taught by Lawyering faculty member Claire Bishop Abely, who currently serves as Senior Lecturer of the Lawyering Program. Through their participation in the Program, Fellows learn about legal writing pedagogy and develop their critiquing and advising skills while further developing their legal research, writing, and analytical skills.
Grades and Credit
Students receive a separate grade for each semester. Participation in the program earns the Fellow two credits per semester. As with the clinical programs, a student who wants to drop the program must petition the Academic Standards Committee for permission.
Selection
Applications for the Lawyering Fellows Program will open in the Spring semester.
