Registration Deadlines & Instructions
Course Registration
Each spring continuing JD students have access to the MyBU Student Portal for course pre-selection through the course selection tool. This system provides students with a convenient way to access and change course information by simply logging on to the MyBU Student Portal with their BU Login Name. Course Selection is a pre-registration process that allows you to select and prioritize your course preferences for the course registration lottery—it does not enroll you in classes for the following academic year.
There is no advantage to registering early (course selection is not first come, first served), however you should not wait until the last minute to make your selections. Course selection will close promptly at 11:59 p.m. on the published deadline. The lottery is run at the end of the course selection period and is maintained so that third-year students have preference for courses and seminars. Over the summer, the Registrar’s Office will mail notification of the courses for which you are officially registered.

Add/Drop Instructions
During the add/drop period, continuing law students will have access to the MyBU Student Portal for course selection. This system provides students with a convenient way to access and change course information by simply logging on to the MyBU Student Portal with your BU Login Name. Once logged in you will click My Academics, select the desired semester, and the click Enrollment on the left-hand side of the screen. Once there you will find the Shopping Cart where you can search and add a course. Please note that you may not add a closed course through the shopping cart. Instructions for dropping and swapping courses can be found here.
Auditing Classes
A course or seminar that is not closed may be audited informally, with no recognition of the class on the transcript, or formally, with recognition of the class and an audit (AUD) grade. To audit a class the student must complete and submit Part I of the Audit Permission form by the end of the add/drop period. This two-part form is available from the Registrar’s Office. Students formally auditing a class are responsible for discussing with the professor what the expectations are regarding attendance, preparation, and participation. At the end of the term, the student must obtain the professor’s signature on Part II of the form to notify the Registrar that the audit was successfully completed.
Although credit is not awarded toward the degree requirement, a student who audits a course or a seminar bears the financial responsibility if they exceed 18 credits in a semester. An audited class may not conflict with any class a student is officially enrolled. An audited class may not be converted to a graded course after the end of the add/drop period.
Students cannot register to audit a course through the shopping cart. Please direct any questions regarding auditing a course or seminar to the Law Registrar’s Office.
Non-Law Students
Non-law students who are interested in taking a course at the Law School must obtain the permission of the instructor and the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Stephen Marks.
Note: Non-law students must register directly through the Law Registrar’s Office in person or in writing. Non-law students may register only after the law student registration process is complete. Registration should include: Name, BU ID number (if applicable), Social Security number, Current address, Current telephone number, Date of birth, Course Number, Course Name, Instructor’s Name.
