In the accelerated three-year JD/MBA program, you will take a full load of courses over seven semesters in the School of Law and  Questrom School of Business, including the summer following your first year. You will still get the full BU Law experience, including opportunities to participate in clinics, serve on law journals, pursue the Transactional Practice concentration, and take part in On-Campus Interviewing. Plus, you won’t take courses during the summer after your second year, so you can complete a summer internship in a law firm or other legal setting.

In the first year, you will enroll in the standard first-year law courses, except for Torts and Criminal Law, along with four required MBA courses. You will take a full load of law and business courses during the summer after your first year. These courses will be offered in the evening, so you’ll have greater flexibility with your daytime hours throughout the summer. You will take a combination of law and business courses during your final two years, including Torts, Criminal Law, Corporate Law, and Introduction to Federal Income Taxation.

Program Requirements

Students may apply to the J.D. degree up to 12 credits of graduate-level work taken at the Questrom School of Business. The Questrom School of Business allows dual degree students to apply a limited number of School of Law courses toward the MBA degree. (An exception is that no law-taught management courses may be transferred to the Questrom School of Business for MBA credit). The remaining requirements for the MBA consist of 32 Questrom credit hours of required courses. Courses in financial reporting, data analysis, and team learning provide a sound foundation for management decisions and for the functional courses that follow. Courses in finance, marketing, economics, and operations management build on this foundation to focus more specifically on the various roles of the manager. The diverse elements of the core curriculum are integrated in a “capstone” course, which focuses on the connections between business strategy and business process.

*Leading Organizations and People (OB 712) must be taken first. This course and Managing Career Growth (ES 707) are taught by the same professor and must be taken at the same time. 

**Business law & Ethics (PL 700)  may be waived with completion of appropriate course work at LAW.

***Pemba Launch (MG 705) is also an MBA required course.

Admissions Requirements

For the Accelerated Three-Year JD/MBA, you must apply separately to, and be accepted by, both the School of Law and the Questrom School of Business before you enroll at BU. If you are a current BU Law student who is interested in earning an MBA, you may apply to the four-year JD/MBA program.

  • Questrom School of Business application
  • An official score on the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) OR the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) from the past 5 years (the LSAT will NOT be accepted in lieu of the GMAT or GRE)
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Two required essays
  • Official copies of all university-level transcripts (undergraduate and graduate)
  • Current resume

Although work experience is not a requirement of admissions, many candidates do have some post-graduate work experience. As such, candidates with little or no work experience should be stronger in other admissions criteria, such as GPA and GMAT.
