Resources for International Students

Although we attempt to provide as many scholarships as possible, our funds are limited.  Various sources of assistance may be available to international students through resources outside the University.

While this page does list a number of possible scholarship opportunities, you are encouraged to check other resources as well. One excellent place to start is the AccessLex Law School Scholarship Databank. This database includes over 800 scholarships and writing competitions for law school.

Non-Country or Region Specific

Andrea Scott International Graduate Scholarship
Scholarship recipients will share Andrea Scott’s inspiring commitment to social justice, criminal justice reform, women’s rights, creative arts, diversity, equity and inclusion, educational access and equity, international policy, and higher education leadership. Applicants must have a valid IELTS Academic score that meets their program’s English proficiency requirement. IELTS score cannot be more than 2 years old by time of application deadline.  Award amount is $5,000.

American Association of University Women (AAUW)
AAUW helps women around the globe break through barriers and pursue their dreams of obtaining graduate degrees or making an impact in their communities. International Fellowships are awarded for full-time study in the US to women who are not US citizens or permanent residents in the amount of $18,000 (Master’s/First Professional Degree Fellowship).

EducationUSA
EducationUSA is a US Department of State network of over 430 international student advising centers in more than 175 countries and territories that provides financial aid opportunities to international students who are interested in studying in the US.

Fulbright Foreign Student Program
The Fulbright Foreign Student Program brings citizens of other countries to the United States for Master’s degree or Ph.D. study at US universities or other appropriate institutions. Foreign students apply for Fulbright Fellowships through the Fulbright Commission/Foundation or US Embassy in their home countries.

Institute of International Education
IIE offers foreign students a “toolkit” of resources for funding study in the US, with a focus on sources such as the Fulbright Program, Education USA, and Funding For US Study.

International Student Organization in the USA (ISO)
ISO provides a detailed list of organizations which offer scholarships and grants to international students based upon factors such as background and area of interest.

Philanthropic Educational Organization (P.E.O.) International
Provides scholarships up to $12,500 for women from other countries for full-time graduate study in the US and Canada.

Postgrad Solutions LLM and Postgraduate Law Study Bursary
Postgrad Solutions offers five £2,0000 bursaries (scholarships) per year to domestic, international, and UK students who have been accepted to an LLM Program in the US or abroad. Eligible candidates must have already accepted an offer at the chosen institution where they intend to pursue the LLM.

World Bank Scholarships
Funded by the Japanese government, these scholarships provide funding for graduate education to Japanese citizens and citizens of developing countries in development-related fields.

AFRICA

8B Education Investments
Offers tailored loan options for African students pursuing higher education at top global universities. Loans are available through 8B directly or in partnership with international and U.S.-based lenders. Eligibility generally requires acceptance into an accredited institution and may include criteria such as academic performance and financial need.

Advance Africa 
A listing of LLM-related scholarships for citizens of African nations.

Richard A. Horowitz Fund
A one-time award is granted to one or two students for graduate study for a 12 month period. The amount of the award normally ranges from $6,000 to $12,000.

ASIA & AFRICA

The Aga Khan Foundation International Scholarship
Scholarships for students from select developing countries to pursue a postgraduate education. Applications are accepted from nationals of the following countries: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Egypt, India, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Madagascar, Mozambique, Pakistan, Syria, Tajikistan, Tanzania, and Uganda. Applicants who live in Canada, France, Portugal and the USA are also able to apply if they are originally from one of the above developing countries, are interested in development-related studies and who have no other means of financing their education. The scholarship provides funding for tuition fees and living costs only.

OAS Academic Scholarship Program
The Organization of American States offers funding to residents of American countries.

BELGIUM

The Belgium American Educational Foundation (BAEF)
BAEF offers non-renewable grants to Belgian citizens for one academic year of graduate study in the US The Foundation will pay up to $30,000 for tuition and health insurance at a US institution and $18,000 to cover living and travel expenses.

BRAZIL

Fundação Estudar
Fundação Estudar offers scholarships to Brazilian nationals and citizens who want to further their education by pursuing undergraduate or graduate study in Brazil and abroad.

Instituto Ling
Instituto Ling/EAGV-LLM offers partial scholarships to Brazilians who have been accepted to an LLM Program in the US or Europe and can demonstrate a need for funding. Individual amounts of funding vary, but a typical award is approximately $5,000 – $25,000.

CANADA

Aide Financière Aux Études
Aide Financière Aux Études provides Canadian citizens or permanent residents who are residents of Quebec with financial assistance for full-time study at an educational institution in or outside of Quebec through the Loans and Bursaries Program. Funding is provided in the form of loans or bursaries in varying amounts.

Government of Canada
Scholarships for graduate level study/research offered to Canadians wishing to study abroad.

The Mackenzie King Scholarships
Open to graduates of Canadian universities seeking funding for graduate study abroad.

FINLAND

Finlandia Foundation National P.J.C. Lindfors Legal Studies Fund
The P.J.C. Lindfors Legal Scholarship is open to citizens of Finland who have applied to, been accepted to, or enrolled in an ABA-approved US law school. Typical awards are offered in the amount of $1,000 – $3,000.

FRANCE

White & Case Annual Business Law Scholarship
White & Case LLP awards an annual €40,000 scholarship (split among three students) to economically disadvantaged law students in France to study abroad. This scholarship is unique among law firms in Paris.

GERMANY

Brain Capital: The LLM Education Fund
The LLM Education Fund offers income-based repayment financing options to cover tuition fees and living expenses for LLM studies. German students seeking to pursue an LLM degree abroad are eligible, and applications are accepted on an ongoing basis. Fund recipients receive financial support to cover their program fees and living expenses, and income-based repayment will begin after graduation from the LLM program.

INDIA

GyanDhan Scholarship
This scholarship is for Indian residents with an undergraduate degree from an Indian institution. The scholarship amount is INR 1 lakh. Eligible students must be pursuing a 2-year postgraduate course abroad (includes the US). If taking an education loan, applicants must apply for an education loan through GyanDhan’s partner lenders.

Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation
Grants scholarships for Indian students accepted at top American, European and UK institutions, for funding requirements including tuition fees.

The JN Tata Endowment for the Higher Education of Indians
The amount to be awarded to each scholar by way of the loan scholarship ranges from Rs.2,00,000/- and Rs.10,00,000/-. All selected applicants do not necessarily qualify for the maximum amount. The selected scholars may also recommend for a gift scholarship and travel assistance from our allied Trusts as may be decided at the sole discretion of the Trustees of the concerned Trusts. A gift scholarship can be for a maximum amount of Rs.10,00,000/- and the travel grant can be a maximum of Rs.50,000/-.

INDONESIA

Indonesia Endowment Fund of Education (LPDP)
A highly selective full-ride scholarship program offered by the Indonesian government to all Indonesian young professionals who want to pursue a master’s or doctorate degree at an Indonesian or overseas institution

ITALY

ASLA-ALMA Joint Scholarship
ASLA (Association of Italian Law Firms) and ALMA (Italian LLM Association) jointly award two €5,000 scholarships per year to Italian law graduates seeking to pursue an LLM at a US law school.

Italian Student Loan Fund (Fondo per Studenti Italiani)
The Fund offers financial aid to Italian university graduates who wish to attend a post-graduate course (Master of Ph.D.) in the US. Financing is awarded at a maximum of €20,000.

KAZAKHSTAN

Bolashak International Scholarship
Offers scholarships to talented Kazakhstani citizens for graduate level studies. Award can cover full tuition, books, insurance, travel expenses, and monthly stipends for living costs.

LATIN AMERICA & THE CARIBBEAN

COLFUTURO
COLFUTURO provides Colombian citizens seeking postgraduate study abroad with scholarship-loans of up to $25,000 per year for a maximum study period of two years through the “Crédito Beca” program.

The Rowe Fund (Organization of American States)
The Rowe Fund helps qualified citizens from Latin America and Caribbean OAS Member States finance their studies across the US with awards of interest-free loans of up to $15,000.

MEXICO

FUNED
FUNED (Fundación Mexicana para la Educación, la Tecnología y la Ciencia) offers scholarships and grants for high-achieving Mexican students to study postgraduate masters degree programs.

MIDDLE EAST/NORTH AFRICA

AMIDEAST
Scholarships and scholarship matching resources for students from North Africa and the Middle East.

NETHERLANDS

WilWeg
WilWeg lists a variety of scholarship programs for study abroad, including the Holland Scholarship and others administered by EP-Nuffic. Study in Holland provides a comprehensive database of grant and scholarship opportunities, within which candidates may search on the basis of awards covering the field of law. The Beursopener search engine additionally provides a listing of over 250 grants and scholarships for Dutch students seeking internships, research opportunities, and positions abroad.

NORWAY

NORAM Scholarships
The Norway-America Association offers stipends to Norwegian citizens for graduate study and research in the U.S. in the amount of $2,000 – $20,000. Preference will be given to those residing in Norway and planning to return to Norway to continue their academic/professional work. Up to 35 scholarships are awarded each year, and a maximum of two grants may be received from NORAM for Master’s and Ph.D. studies in the US.

POLAND

The Kosciuszko Foundation
The Kosciuszko Foundation annually awards a number of Fellowships/Grants for advanced study, research, and/or teaching at universities and other institutions of higher learning in the United States.

SAUDI ARABIA

SACM
The Saudia Arabian Cultural Mission (SACM) can provide information about scholarships offered by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia government to study in the US.

SCANDINAVIA

American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF)
ASF offers funding to citizens of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, or Sweden to pursue study or research programs (typically at the graduate level) in the US for up to one year.

SCOTLAND

St. Andrew’s Society of the State of New York
The Society provides funding in the amount of $20,000 to $30,000 for two Scottish graduate students to study in the US per year. Funds should be used initially against tuition, then board, transportation and other expenses.

SINGAPORE

Kathryn Aguirre Worth Memorial Scholarship
Established with support from White & Case, Standard Chartered Bank, and other donors in Singapore and New York, the scholarship is open to National University of Singapore (NUS) LLB graduates who plan to pursue an LLM degree at an accredited US law school. The scholarship provides a stipend of up to $15,000.

SPAIN

Fundación Rafael del Pino
This foundation provides limited scholarships per year for Spanish students who plan to pursue graduate-level study in Spain or abroad.

THAILAND

Royal Thai Government Scholarship Program
The Royal Thai Government Scholarship Program provides funding for students so that they may bring back innovative ideas and expertise to help in the technological and economic development of their country.

UKRAINE

WorldWideStudies Scholarship
The Victor Pinchuk Foundation’s WorldWideStudies Scholarship offers grant awards covering 60% of expenses required to complete a Master’s degree abroad up to $30,000. Eligible candidates must be Ukrainian citizens under the age of 35 at the time of enrollment in the degree program.

UNITED KINGDOM

British Universities North America Club (BUNAC)
BUNAC Educational Scholarship Trust (BEST) scholarships offer financial assistance to UK passport holders seeking to undertake postgraduate study in the US or Canada. Individual award amounts vary, but a typical award is in the amount of approximately £5,000 to £10,000.

Private Educational Loans

On an annual basis, Boston University invites lenders to provide information about their products through a Request for Information (RFI) process. The University has reviewed the information provided by every lender who submitted information and, based on the information submitted, identified the following loan products as having competitive rates, customer service, and borrower benefits. The availability of bar exam study borrowing was also considered.

You are not required to borrow from one of the lenders identified here or in other University materials. You may choose to borrow from any lender without penalty. We urge you to compare information concerning credit-based student loans carefully to determine the best fit for your particular circumstance.

International Students – this page contains information about credit-based loans available to international students and includes information about loans that do not require a co-signer who is a US citizen of permanent resident.

Law School Student Loans – this page includes information about credit-based loans available to students enrolled in the School of Law. Several of these loans may be available to law students who have a cosigner who is a US citizen or permanent resident.

Other Loan Sources

The website below lists information on loan options that international students seeking to study in the US have available to them. The search results will not provide a list of every possible lender that will lend to international students. Students are encouraged to use multiple resources to find the best option for their needs.
