Career Advising for JD Students

As a BU Law student, the Office of Career Development & Public Service (CDO) will provide you with individualized career advice specifically focused on helping you to achieve your professional goals. In the fall of your 1L year, one of our advisors will be designated to work one-on-one with you. All of our advisors are experienced attorneys who practiced in the areas in which they advise our students, so they are experts in these fields and bring their knowledge to bear to assisting you with your personal career journey. Our advisors will help you identify your career goals, the courses and work experience you need to achieve these, work with you to develop your job search strategy, and serve as a knowledgeable guide to the internal and external resources you’ll need to succeed.

While you will have a designated CDO advisor working with you throughout your law school career, all of the CDO advisors are also available as resources to you (appointments with any advisor are easily made via our online appointment system), and our commitment to you extends beyond graduation—the CDO’s services remain available to you as an alumnus after graduation.

Throughout your time at BU Law, the CDO runs programs designed to ensure you are optimally positioned as a candidate—resume and cover letter review programs, professional skills coaching, networking preparation and opportunities, and mock interviews, among others. We also bring practitioners from a broad range of practices to campus, so you are exposed to the breadth of career options and practice settings available to you as a BU Law graduate.

Connecting with Alumni

Our graduates include federal judges, senators, corporate directors, district attorneys, state governors, and company presidents. They work in all areas of law, seeking to enact positive changes in clients’ lives, contributing to key pieces of legislation, and providing guidance to companies around the globe. Long after graduation, BU Law alumni stay connected with the School and each other, providing crucial support to the current student body. The First-Year Mentor Program pairs first-year students with a BU Law alumni mentor, allowing students to benefit from the guidance and career advice offered by alumni working in their field of interest.

The Esdaile Alumni Center and the Career Development Office host reunion events and organize lectures throughout the year.
