2024 ECOSOC Special Meeting on “International Cooperation in Tax Matters”
Steven Dean will speak at the United Nations as part of the Economic and Social Council’s 2024 Special Meeting on International Cooperation in Tax Matters on his forthcoming book, Global Jim Crow: Taxation And Racial Capitalism (Oxford University Press).
The Special Meeting aims to explore effective fiscal policies for inclusive and sustainable development, as well as to promote a fair, inclusive, and effective international tax system. The event will be held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York and live-streamed on UN Web TV.
Global Jim Crow confronts the racial bias that is the original sin of international taxation. With the arrival of independence for Sub-Saharan African states racism and xenophobia began to shape those complex global rules in ways that have made them an obstacle to securing human rights and achieving sustainable development.
Addressing that bias has become an essential precondition for global tax justice.
