BU Law alum honored at the organization’s 24th Annual Luncheon.
Class of 2012 alum Mary Herman was recognized by the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California at the organization’s 24th Annual Luncheon, an occasion publicly honoring the individuals and firms that contribute to their work. According to the ACLU of Southern California, their annual luncheon, “celebrate[s] our victories, the advocates who partner with us, and the entertainment leaders who use their voices to advance our shared vision of liberty and justice for all.” Herman was honored for her pro bono work as part of a team from Latham & Watkins LLP.
Latham & Watkins aided the ACLU in a series of Deported Veterans Cases. For her contribution to these cases, Herman received the Immigrant Justice Award. Herman’s work on the Soliai case was one of several that brought attention to the thousands of immigrants who served in the United States military yet were deported after their service. With the help and support of Herman and her colleagues, the ACLU of Southern California not only fought for the rights of these veterans, but were able to secure citizenship for many of them.
The ongoing Soliai case involves an honorably discharged US veteran who has been unable to reenter the US to attend a naturalization interview. Herman’s involvement in the case centered around identifying possible ways for his reentry into the country.
The services provided by Latham & Watkins LLP was called “invaluable” by the organization, and the ACLU of Southern California noted that without the help of Herman and her colleagues, “we could not have done what we have done, and could not continue in this fight.”
After obtaining her JD from BU School of Law, Herman joined Latham & Watkins in 2012, and worked in their Boston office until 2016 when she moved to their Century City office. Herman was a corporate associate for over five years. With the firm, she had a broad corporate practice including venture capital, mergers and acquisitions, public company representation and offerings and private equity. Herman recently joined Virgin Hyperloop One, a company working toward commercializing the use of the Hyperloop, a form of high-speed rail transportation as a corporate securities counsel. In this position Herman works on equity issuances, securities law compliance, and corporate governance.
The awards given out at the annual luncheon included the Access to Justice Award, the Education Equity Award, the Equal Justice Award, and the Homeless Rights Advocacy Award. Others honored at the ACLU Southern California’s 24th Annual Luncheon included attorneys from Amazon Studios Legal Department and Bruce Miller, the creator and producer of The Handmaid’s Tale.
BU Law congratulates Herman on all her accomplishments and this well-deserved honor!
