Introducing Gabe Adugna: new Africana librarian.
The African Studies Library is pleased to announce that Gabeyehyu (Gabe) Adugna has joined the African Studies Library staff as the new Africana Librarian.
Gabe brings with him 15 years of experience as a reference & instruction librarian. Most recently, he comes from the Baltimore-D.C. area where he had been working at a library affiliated with Defense Department Medical Research facility as Technical Information Specialist. In addition to assisting the day-to-day operation of the library, he created research guides and conducted as many animal protocol related literature searches to assist scientists affiliated with the research institute.
He originally hails from Ethiopia where he pursued a Diploma in Library Science at the Addis Ababa University, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He subsequently served as Librarian for the National Meteorological Services Agency. After living in India for a time, he moved to Switzerland and worked as librarian for two Geneva based NGO’s (Center for our Common Future & International Academy of the Environment).
He moved to the Baltimore-D.C. area where he received his Masters of Library Science at University of Maryland at College Park. During this time, he spent nine years as the solo-librarian in charge of the Joint Library of Clinical Social Work Institute and Washington School of psychiatry in Washington, D.C.
He then spent six years as Reference & Instruction Librarian at the Community College of Baltimore County where he was heavily engaged in outreach and instruction. He participated actively in the College’s Global Education Initiative, particularly in the International Community Outreach subcommittee.
Gabe’s library positions have focused largely on the health sciences and he brings with him a wide variety of experience in cataloging, reference, instruction and outreach. Gabe’s varied international background has carried through to his work and he has a particular interest in both international students and diaspora communities living in the United States.
