Halloween DecorationsHalloween, which dates back to Celtic rituals thousands of years ago, has long been associated with witches, ghosts and vampires. Today, Halloween has become a celebration characterized by child-friendly activities such as costumes, trick-or-treating and carving pumpkins into jack-o’-lanterns. To help celebrate the holiday, we have compiled a few interesting Halloween-related numbers:

  • $8.4 billion: Total estimated spending for Halloween 2016 (National Retail Federation).
  • $1.1 billion: Dollar value of U.S. fresh apples exported in 2014.  Whether bobbing for or dipping in caramel, apples can be a fun Halloween treat (U.S. Census Bureau).
  • 75%: Percentage of households that plan to hand out candy to trick-or-treaters this year (National Confectioners Association).
  • $82.93:  Average amount that U.S. consumers are expected to spend on Halloween this year (NRF).
  • $417 million:  Total estimated spending for Halloween pet costumes this year (NRF).

According to the National Retail Federation, the most popular children’s costumes are expected to be action figures, superheroes, princesses, and animals this year.  Adults are planning to dress up as Batman characters, witches, pirates, animals, and of course political figures.  Sixteen percent of consumers are expected to dress up their pets and some of the top costumes will include pumpkin, hot dog, and bumblebee.
