Association for Computing Machinery

About the Agreement

As of January 1, 2024, BU Libraries has entered into a Read & Publish Transformative Open Access (OA) Agreement with the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). As part of ACM’s Transformative Model for Open Access Publication (ACM OPEN), the Article Processing Charge (APC) is fully waived for all BU-affiliated authors publishing OA articles in ACM’s journals, conference proceedings, and magazines. ACM will deposit copies of all OA articles published by BU affiliated authors into the BU’s institutional repository, OpenBU. BU institutional members also have access to content in the ACM Digital Library.

The list of publications included in this agreement is available on the ACM Publications Eligible for Open Access Publishing Under ACM OPEN.

How to Apply

To apply for the Transformative OA Agreement benefit:

  1. Ensure you have used BU affiliation, address, and email for your account registration with the ACM conference, journal, or magazine. Please note that you must use your BU email address to be routed to the ACM Open program. The ACM Open Author eRights system recognizes the author is from a participating institution or BU based on the email domain.
  2. You receive a link to the ACM Open Author eRights platform in an email from the journal editor upon acceptance of your manuscript for publication, as a result of your BU affiliation.
  3. Click on the link. If the paper is part of the ACM Open Program, the ACM Open Edit Screen will have a line at the top saying “This paper is part of the ACM Open Program”. You confirm all information on the edit screen to make sure the title and all the author information is correct.
  4. Once you have reviewed the information and determined it is correct, click on the check box and then click on Proceed to eRights Form button.
  5. Clicking on the Proceed to eRights Form button will bring you to the ACM eRights Form. The ACM Open eRights Form defaults to the Institutionally Paid Open Access rights and a Creative Commons CC-BY 4.0 License. There are six different Creative Commons Licenses you can choose from by clicking on the different radio buttons:

6. After selecting your Creative Commons license and clicking the Proceed button, you will see details which gives ACM the permission to publish your work.

7. Following submission of your eRights Form, you will receive email confirmation of the acceptance of the form along with a copy for your record.
