Internet Speed Test
Basic Information
- Minimum Requirements:
- General Web Surfing, E-mail & Social Media: 1 Mbps
- Video conferencing (upload/download speed): 2-4 Mbps
- Standard-definition video streaming: 3-4 Mbps
- High-definition video streaming: 5-8 Mbps
- Frequent large file downloading: 50 Mbps
- Your available bandwidth can be affected by other households’ network demand, your own hardware and your provider’s infrastructure quality.
- If you use WiFi connection, it will not deliver the same speeds as your wired connection.
- If you have an important meeting, a wired connection will always offer the best speed.
Easy Steps to improve home WiFi speed:
- Reduce interference: Physical barriers such as walls, appliances, stairs, bookcases, etc. will impact WiFi speed. Concrete, metal and plaster will impede WiFi signal strength.
- Router placement: Keep the router elevated, on a desk or shelf. Avoid placing the router in a basement or attic.
- Connect fewer devices: Each device connecting to the internet eats more of the WiFi pie.
- There will be less WiFi bandwidth available if you have multiple devices that are streaming movies, playing online video games, or web conferencing.
- Turn off WiFi enabled devices that you aren’t using.
- Many routers will slow down to accommodate the speed of the slowest/oldest device connected.
- Housekeeping:
- Close unused browser windows & tabs on your machine. They slow you down.
- Clear cookies and browser cache: Old searches may slow your computer down.
