Spinal Cord Injury Model Systems Program

The Spinal Cord Injury Model System (SCIMS) Program supports innovative projects and research in the delivery, demonstration, and evaluation of medical, rehabilitation, vocational and other services to meet the needs of individuals with SCI. It is sponsored by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR).

The New England Regional Spinal Cord Injury Center Network was one of the original Model Centers, awarded this designation in 1973.  During the 2011-2016 grant Cycle, NERSCIC is one of 14 Model System Centers across the United States working together to demonstrate improved care and outcomes, maintain a national database, participate in independent and collaborative research, and provide continuing education related to spinal cord injury.  Read more about SCI Model Systems Resources at the bottom of this page.

National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center (NSCISC)
NSCISC, located at UAB, supports and directs the collection, management and analysis of data contributed from SCIMS Centers.  The Model System database is the world’s largest and longest spinal cord injury research database.  Findings resulting from database-oriented research have had significant impact on the delivery and nature of medical rehabilitation services provided to SCI patients.
