As a former first-gen graduate student who grew up in the Pacific Northwest, I understand how challenging it can be to navigate a new city, academia, and the hidden curriculum of professionalism all at once. If first-gen students feel overwhelmed, I want them to know that they are not alone! Through my trial-and-error experiences as a young professional, I’ve picked up some knowledge about finding internships, evaluating graduate programs, making career pivots, starting over in new cities, attending professional conferences, and identifying budget-friendly events most likely to hand out free food. If any part of my story resonates with you, please reach out! I’d like to share the strategies that have worked for me, with others who are discovering their paths.
