Essentials: Leadership Fundamentals

Essentials: Leadership Fundamentals equips employees across BU with the fundamentals of leadership. Whether you are responsible for executing a cross-functional program, overseeing projects and resources, the competencies in this program can help you get buy-in from key stakeholders, improve collaboration, and provide a career boost.  

The virtual, live instructor-led training introduces evidence-based frameworks through experiential activities and peer-based learning. Participants reflect, develop, experiment, and adapt of the core competencies and skills. Gain the mindset, tools, and skills needed to be successful when leading others without direct reporting authority. 

Core competencies 

  • Leading scopes of work: Developing and demonstrating the mindsets and practices that ensure successful and timely delivery of your initiatives.   
  • Building Influence: Creating partnerships and buy-in on scopes of work that you lead. 
  • Decision Making: Applying strategies for ensuring you identify the right problems and find the optimal solutions.   

    Program outcomes

    • Practice and apply competencies in fundamentals of leadership, including clear communication, building influence, decision making, and self-awareness.
    • Develop a process to identify and lead scopes of work that leads to positive change.
    • Define responsibilities and frameworks in leading projects. Practice how to adapt as project needs change. 

    Key Features 

    This is a virtual program that combines asynchronous and synchronous learning.  The key features of this course include: 

    • Five virtual sessions and one self-paced course.
    • Approximately 12hrs of work including learning of concepts, practice, and participation.
    • Completion of all virtual sessions and self-paced learning are required to gain a course certificate.
    • Manager approval is required. This is simply to ensure that your manager is aware and committed to supporting your learning and practice. 

    Audience/Eligibility 

    Open to all employees, with approval from their supervisor. This course is most impactful for: 

    • Those who are new to leading substantive scopes of work but do not have direct reports.
    • Individuals who are high achieving in their current roles and demonstrate potential to lead their peers.
    • Emerging leaders who are curious to gain an introduction to the knowledge, skills, and discernment essentials in the current landscape of leadership.
