Prof. Adil Najam, the Director of the Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future and a Professor International Relations and of Geography and Environment at Boston University, has been awarded one of Pakistan’s highest civilian decoration, the Sitara-i-Imtiaz (Star of Excellence), by the President of Pakistan.

Prof. Najam was recognized for this high civil honor for his contribution and public service in the field of environment, development and public policy. This year’s list of recipients of Pakistan’s national civil awards was announced by the President of Pakistan on the occasion of Pakistan’s Independence Day (August 14, 2009). The investiture ceremony will take place at the President’s House, Islamabad, Pakistan, on Pakistan Day, March 23, 2010).

Dr. Adil Najam, who is also the Frederick S. Pardee Professor of Global Public Policy at Boston University, was recently appointed by the United Nations Secretary-General to the UN Committee on Development Policy. His research and teaching focuses on issues of global public policy, especially those related to South Asia, Muslim countries, environment and development, and human well-being. He has also served as a Lead Author for the Third and Fourth Assessments of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), work for which the IPCC was awarded the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.

Prof. Najam is a past winner of MIT’s Goodwin Medal for Effective Teaching, the Fletcher School Paddock Teaching Award, and the Stein Rokan Award of the International Political Science Association, the ARNOVA Emerging Scholar Award, and the Pakistan Television Medal for Outstanding Achievement. Prof. Najam also serves on the editorial boards of various scholarly publications. He is highly sought by the popular media for his expertise on the environment as well as on South Asian affairs. He is the founding editor of the blog Pakistaniat.com.
