Dr. Muñoz invited to speak at at IEEE SSIT
Dr. Miquel Muñoz, Postdoctoral Fellow at the the Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future, was invited by the Boston Chapter of the IEEE Society on Social Implications of Technology (SSIT) to speak on technology and climate change on March 22, 2010. The event was open to the public and was advertised to the IEEE Central New England Council membership of 15,000.
In his remarks, Dr. Muñoz highlighted climate change as a development and a equity problem, and as a challenge to current lifestyles and development models. Stressing that climate change is not just a carbon problem, he noted there is no carbon techno-fix. Dr. Muñoz elaborated on the workings of the UNFCCC, on Copenhagen and on the ways for technologists to get involved in international climate change negotiations. He then elaborated on the requirements of climate technologies, including effectiveness and feasibility, and identified a series of mitigation, adaptation and efficiency technologies.
