Prof. Adil Najam, Boston University Professor of International Relations and of Geography and Environment and Director of the Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer Range Future, was quoted extensively in a detailed report in the magazine Nature (467, 378-379; September 2010) on the state of higher education in Pakistan (also see).

Prof. Najam was an active participant in the policy discussions around Pakistan’s higher education and was part of the team that formulated the policy changes in Pakistan, since then he has written about the specific experience in Pakistan on higher education reform (Nature, 461, 38-39; 2009) and generally on higher education reform in developing countries (Pardee Paper No. 15, May 2010). The new report in Nature, Prof. Adil Najam quotes Prof. Najam explaining how the massive reforms happened, and why.

Nature has also published a related editorial on the subject, in which it argues: “There are many problems facing Pakistan’s higher-education system. But there is also cause for optimism. With proper management and sufficient funds, the progress made over the past decade can be preserved.”
