Diplomacy Experts Discuss “Diplomacy for the Facebook Era” at Pardee House
The Frederick S Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future hosted a meeting of diplomacy experts on April 20 called “Diplomacy for the Facebook Era” organized and chaired by Amb. Paul Webster Hare, the former British ambassador to Cuba who currently is a Lecturer in Diplomacy at Boston University’s International Relations Department.
The small group of leading diplomacy scholars and practitioners met to discuss what traditional aspects of diplomacy continue to work well and what aspects need to change to be effective in the 21st century, when technology provides instant information to and connections among citizens and governments around the globe.
Experts in addition to Amb. Hare who participated in the meeting include Amb. Nicholas Burns and Cathryn Clüver of The Future of Diplomacy Project at the Harvard Kennedy School; Amb. Paul Heinbecker of Laurier University and the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) in Waterloo, Canada; Dr. Bruce Jones of New York University and the Brookings Institution; Prof. J.P. Singh of Georgetown University; Prof. Paul Sharp of the University of Minnesota, Duluth; and Prof. Robert Zelnick of Boston University. Pardee Center Graduate Fellow Ahmet Selim Tekelioglu and Programs Manager Cynthia Barakatt also attended.
