Irene Monasterolo, a post-doctoral associate at the Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future, presented a paper at the 1.5 Degrees Conference organized by the Environmental Change Institute at the University of Oxford. Monasterolo’s paper, titled “When the elephant meets the mouse: modeling the impact of fossil fuels and renewable energy subsidies on macro-economic and financial stability,” was presented during the session focused on Climate Finance led by Prof. Cameron Hepburn.

The conference, held from September 20-22 at Oxford, brought together a wide range of researchers, policymakers, and civil society members to explore the challenge of meeting the 1.5 degrees target set forth in the Paris Agreement. The conference intends to contribute to the Special Report on the impacts of 1.5 degrees of global warming, which the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was called upon to produce by 2018.

Monasterolo also spoke at an international conference titled “Economics, Economic Policies and Sustainable Growth in the wake of the Crisis” from September 6-10 at the Università Politecnica delle Marche in Ancona, Italy. The conference explored, from a variety of perspectives, the effects of the Great Recession on the economy and on economic theory, and examined ways to reshape the economy to ensure sustainable and equitable growth in the future.
