Post-Doc Fellow Suranjana Nabar-Bhaduri Presents Paper at Economics Meeting

Graduate FellowPardee Post Doctorate Fellow Suranjana Nabar-Bhaduri presented a paper titled,“The Enigma of India’s Structural Dynamics,” at the 38th Annual Conference of the Eastern Economic Association (EEA) held at the Boston Park Plaza hotel from the 9 –11 March 2012.

In her presentation Dr. Nabar-Bhaduri argued that the Indian economy is not such a rosie picture as the media would have it seem. According to Dr. Nabar-Bhaduri, the country suffers from weak and concentrated productivity improvements in the manufacturing sector, and low employment growth. These issues are paired with continued weakness in productivity in the agriculture sector. Furthermore, she argued, the country’s trade balance has shown persistent deficits for a major part of the post-independence period.

Dr. Nabar-Bhaduri argued that there is a need for more active policy efforts to be directed toward improving efficiency of Indian manufacturing and agriculture. Efforts toward direct employment generation programs in the form of rural development programs, large scale infrastructural development projects are also needed, said Dr. Nabar-Bhaduri. She also called for more active research and development programs, including joint collaborations between the private and public sector.
