Paul Hare: Cuba and the European Union can work together
Professor Paul Webster Hare, visiting lecturer in International relations for the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston Univeristy, spoke to the Inter-American Dialogue’s Latin America Advisor newsletter on Nov. 12. You can read his remarks here.
“Generally, E.U. members act as commercial competitors in the region, but the agenda of conflict settlement in Colombia suits the E.U. well,” said Hare in the article. “It has experience in areas like the Balkans and Northern Ireland of reconciling warring factions. Cuba has also been an important mediator in the Colombia process.”
Hare was the British Ambassador to Cuba from 2001 – 2004. Hare served overseas in Portugal, New York, at the UK Representation at the EU in Brussels, and in Venezuela as Deputy Head of Mission. He was Head of the Foreign Office’s Non-Proliferation Department. He is a Fellow of the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard University and a member of the Brookings Institution Core Group on Cuba. His novel, “Moncada – A Cuban Story”, set in modern Cuba, was published in May 2010. A new book on diplomacy, “Making Diplomacy Work: Intelligent Innovation for the Modern World,” will be published by SAGE publications in early 2015.
