Pardee School Celebrates at ISA

ISA Final

The Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University will sponsor an Inaugural Year reception at this year’s International Studies Association (ISA) Annual Convention on Thursday, Feb. 19.

The reception will take place in the Elmwood Room at the Hilton Riverside from 7 – 8 p.m. It will serve as a get-together to celebrate the founding of the Pardee School, as well as an opportunity to discuss “The Political Economy of Security,” a joint project of Pardee prof. Kaija Schilde and Political Science prof. Rosella Cappella Zielinski which will be presented at an ISA workshop earlier the same day.

“One of the goals of the Pardee School is to be interdisciplinary. and the knowledge that’s been opened up by working with [Zielinski] has been wonderful,” said Schilde. “It’s important to look at the links between money and war, between security and peace. You need to study what lies between going to war and the costs of war.”

Zielinski and Schilde, along with Norrin Ripsman of Concordia University, received a venture grant to support innovative and pioneering research from the International Studies Association. The grant will be used to hold the workshop. It will feature 26 scholars from around the globe studying the political economy of security.

The goal of the workshop is to revisit and revise the study of national security in light of the major events in the past decade including economic crisis, austerity measures, and increased financial globalization. This economic climate has had serious ramifications for the ability of states to project military power, finance conflicts, and resolve disputes.

The workshop in New Orleans will provide the starting point for a forthcoming speaker series and workshop at the Pardee School titled the BU Project for the Study of the Political Economy of Security.
