Profs. Hefner and Longman Join Pardee School DIS Faculty

Hefner-Longman

Professor Robert Hefner of the Department of Anthropology and Associate Professor Timothy Longman of the Department of Political Science have both assumed joint appointments in the Division of International Studies (DIS) of the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies. As joint appointments, they will both now also be professors of international relations and serve on the faculty of DIS.

Professor Hefner is a former president of the Association for Asian Studies and his research focuses on religion, pluralism, and world affairs, and particularly on Islam and civil society in South East Asia. His recent books include Shari‘a Politics:  Islamic Law and Society in the Modern World (Indiana University Press 2011) and Muslims and Modernity: Culture and Society Since 1800 (Cambridge University Press 2010). He is also the Director of the Institute on Culture, Religion, and World Affairs (CURA), which is part of the Division of Regional Studies at the BU Pardee School.

Associate Professor Longman’s research focuses on state-society relations in Africa, looking particularly at human rights, transitional justice, democratization, civil society, the politics of race and ethnicity, religion and politics, and women and politics. His most recent book is Christianity and Genocide in Rwanda (Cambridge University Press 2010)He is also the Director of the African Studies Center, which is part of the Division of Regional Studies at the BU Pardee School.
