Joseph Fewsmith, Professor of International Relations at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, joined Professor Andrew Nathan of Columbia University and Damien Ma of the Paulson Institute to discuss the political and economic implications of the recent 19th Party Congress in China. The roundtable, entitled “The 19th CCP Congress and Elite Politics,” was hosted by the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for the Study of Contemporary China.

While at the center, Fewsmith recorded a podcast with Professor Neysun Mahboubi, which you can listen to here. Fewsmith and Mahboubi discussed the politics surrounding this latest Congress, from specific personnel decisions to broad policy implications, with special attention to the position of Xi Jinping.

Fewsmith said he enjoyed appearing with Damien Ma, who graduated from the Pardee School in 2004. Fewsmith supervised Ma’s Work for Distinction and said he has enjoyed watching him become one of the best analysts of the Chinese economy and an influential public intellectual.

Fewsmith is Professor of International Relations and Political Science at Boston University. He is the author or editor of eight books, including, most recently, The Logic and Limits of Political Reform in China (January 2013). Fewsmith travels to China regularly and is active in the Association for Asian Studies and the American Political Science Association.
