Faculty and students from the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies attended the Boston University Latin American Alumni Summit held from March 24-26, 2017 in Miami. The Summit was presented by the Boston University Alumni Association in partnership with the Pardee School, and featured world-class faculty and accomplished alumni discussing issues including global and Latin American health, smart cities, economics, investment, and media.

Pardee School Dean Adil Najam delivered the keynote address at the Summit, entitled “Understanding This Global Moment.” Najam said between global events such as the Brexit referendum, a refugee crisis, unchecked climate change and the election of U.S. President Donald Trump, there is little that can be said with certainty or consensus about the world we live in, except that it is in flux. Najam outlined the most important global trends currently defining the world of today, and tomorrow.

Professor of Global Development Policy Kevin Gallagher moderated the opening panel at the Summit examining how political leaders, business leaders, and investors can make sense of Latin American and world markets. Panelists included Alfonso Baigorri Escandón of J.P. Morgan Private Bank, Ana Maria Carrasquilla of Fondo Latinoamericano de Reservas (FLAR), and Serge Elkiner of Yellow Pepper.

Veronica Lopez Gamboa (Pardee ’19) spoke at the Gala Dinner at the Summit, which also featured remarks by President Robert A. Brown and University and alumni leaders.

Najam was also part of a panel at the Summit entitled “Building Global Citizenship – The Role of the University,” which featured Dean Sandro Galea of the School of Public Health and Dean Ann Cudd of the College of Arts and Sciences as panelists and was moderated by Provost Jean Morrison.
