Adil Najam, Dean of the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, was recently interviewed on President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw the United States from the 2015 Paris Climate Accord.

Najam was quoted in a June 2, 2017 article in El Confidencial entitled “Trump Isolates the US and Irritates the World by Withdrawing From the Paris Agreement.

From the text of the article:

“Today Trump announced that the United States is no longer a leader and no longer wants to be a leader,” Adil Najam, Dean of the Boston University School of Global Studies, told Efe.

“The real impact of this decision will not be noticed in climate change, not even in the Paris Agreement. The real blow has been to the position of the United States in the world, “added Najam.

But the experts consulted by EFE do not believe that this offer is “viable”, since the Paris Agreement “was the result not only of years, but decades of talks with a very delicate balance of interests,” in Najam’s words.

“The United States was the country whose interests were best represented in the Paris Agreement. There is no indication that the world can give the US more than it has,” Najam added.

Adil Najam is the inaugural dean of the Pardee School and a professor of international relations and also of earth and environment at Boston University. His research focuses on issues of global public policy, especially those related to global climate change, South Asia, Muslim countries, environment and development, and human development. Najam was a co-author for the Third and Fourth Assessments of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC); work for which the scientific panel was awarded the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for advancing the public understanding of climate change science.
