Schmidt Gives Talk at Brandeis on Germany’s EU Leadership

Vivien SchmidtProfessor of International Relations and Political Science at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, gave a recent talks on Germany’s leadership of the European Union (EU) and Europe’s crisis of legitimacy. Schmidt also recently presented papers on politicization in the EU and the political dynamics of EU governance in times of crisis. 

On November 1, 2017, Schmidt delivered a talk entitled “What Leadership for Germany in the EU, Faced With Rising Populism and Euro-Fatigue?” at the Center for Germany and Europe at Brandeis University.

Schmidt presented a paper entitled “Politicization in the EU:  Between National Politics and EU Political Dynamics,” at the University of Amsterdam Workshop “Transformation or Collapse? Politicization and Integration in Postfunctionalist Times,” on October 12-13, 2017.

On October 11, 2017, Schmidt gave a talk entitled “Europe’s (Euro) Crisis of Legitimacy,” at the Annual Lecture for the International Business Program of the Copenhagen Business School.

Schmidt presented a paper entitled “The Political Dynamics of EU Governance in Response to Crisis:  Toward More or Less EU Legitimacy?”  for a workshop entitled “Beyond Representative Democracy? Design and Legitimacy of Non-Majoritarian Institutions,” in Berlin on Oct 6-7, 2017.

Schmidt is a Jean Monnet Professor of European Integration at Boston University. Her research focuses on European political economy, institutions, democracy, and political theory. She has published ten books, over 100 scholarly journal articles or chapters in books, and numerous policy briefs and comments, most recently on the Eurozone crisis.  Her current work focuses on democratic legitimacy in Europe, with a special focus on the challenges resulting from the Eurozone crisis, and on methodological theory, in particular on the importance of ideas and discourse in political analysis (discursive institutionalism).
