Goldstein Speaks at APSA Panel on Churchill

Erik Goldstein, Professor of International Relations and History at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, was the discussant at a panel on the “Winston S. Churchill on Democracy and Its Discontents” at the American Political Science Association Annual Meeting and Exhibition held in Boston from August 30 – September 2, 2018. 

In his remarks Goldstein focused on some of the characteristics Churchill identified as essential to a leader in a democracy: ability, expertise in a nation’s immediate affairs, and possession of a coherent doctrine. When these any of these attributes are absent, it poses a serious risk to the security of the country, Goldstein said.

Erik Goldstein’s research interests include diplomacy, formulation of national diplomatic strategies, the origins and resolution of armed conflict, and negotiation.
