Center for Europe Hosts Former German Foreign Minister

The Center for the Study of Europe, an affiliated regional center at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, hosted Sigmar Gabriel a member of the German Bundestag and former German Minister for Foreign Affairs, for an October 30, 2018 lecture at 121 Bay State Road. 

Gabriel, who brings a wealth of experience from the local, federal and international levels, gave a lecture entitled “Transatlantic Relations: Europe…Beyond the Comfort Zone.”

He  has held several leading posts in the German government, most recently as Minister for Foreign Affairs (2017-2018) and Vice-Chancellor of Germany (2013-2018). Prior to that he served as Germany’s Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy (2013-2017) and Federal Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (2005-2009). Gabriel was one of the longest serving leaders of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) from 2009 to 2017.

The mission of the Center for the Study of Europe is to promote understanding of Europe through its cultural heritage; its political, economic, and religious histories; its art, literature, music, and philosophy; as well as through its recent emergence as a new kind of international form through the European Union (EU).  Operationally, the center provides a focal point and institutional support for the study of Europe across Boston University through coordination of teaching missions, support of research, community-building among faculty and students, and outreach beyond the University.
