Gallagher, Pardee Students Inducted Into Phi Beta Kappa

Kevin Gallagher, Director of the Global Development Policy (GDP) Center and Professor of Global Development Policy at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies, along with several Pardee School students was welcomed into the Phi Beta Kappa, Epsilon of Massachusetts at Boston University honor society at a ceremony held  on May 17, 2019 at the Tsai Performance Center.

Pardee School Professor of International Relations and History and President of Epsilon Massachusetts Erik Goldstein presided over the ceremony, and welcomed the Pardee School initiates to the honor society including Anna Karina Blanco (Latin American Studies and Economics), Ziling Cheng (Asian Studies, Art and Architecture, and Film and Television), Madison Maeli Crosby (International Relations), Stefanie Margaret Kopp (International Relations and Political Science), Michael Richard Meagher (European Studies and English), and John Francis O’Brien (International Relations).

Pardee School Phi Beta Kappa members initiated in December 2018, including Christopher William Brown (European Studies and International Relations), Sydney Olivia Siwinski (International Relations), and Masha C. Vernik (International Relations) were also present at the ceremony.

Goldstein highlighted the notable Phi Beta Kappa members that the initiates would be joining, including 41 United States Supreme Court justices, 17 United States presidents and 140 Nobel laureates.

“Our initiates today are part of the continuous recognition of academic excellence and scholarship at this University, in which this Society has played its part for over a century now,” Goldstein said.

Goldstein welcomed Gallagher into the honor society as an honorary member.

“It is a pleasure to welcome to Epsilon Chapter a colleague of such great scholarly distinction and inspiring leadership in the liberal arts, and one who has demonstrated a rich and generous dedication to higher education and culture within and outside academia, and thus to the ideals of our Society,” Goldstein said.

Gallagher delivered an address to the Phi Beta Kappa members and initiates, taking a moment to acknowledge the student initiates.

“A Phi Beta Kappa from BU with your depth and breadth — you have the privilege and responsibility to be a global person,” Gallagher said. “With every step along your path to be a future leader — a mother, a father, a sister, a friend, a voter — think about the global context of the world and be sure to engage in the global conversation about the world you want to live in — the world that everybody should live in.”

Pardee School Dean Adil Najam also attended the ceremony along with other Boston University leadership.
