Karra Meets With Members of Uganda NPC

Mahesh Karra, Assistant Professor of Global Development Policy at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, recently met with members of the Uganda National Population Council (NPC) to discuss the importance of the Demographic Dividend as it could apply to informing Ugandan policy and investment priorities that take account of the impact of population and age structure on economic development.

In addition to discussing the technical components of the Demographic Dividend model Karra developed along with his colleagues Josh Wilde from the Max Planck Institute of Demographic Research and David Canning from Harvard University, an objective of the meeting was to identify how the NPC could adapt the model to identify policy levers at the sub-national levels in Uganda.

At present, findings from the model and other comparative analyses of the Demographic Dividend may be incorporated into Uganda’s National Development Plan 3 (2021 – 2025), which is currently being developed.

Karra’s academic and research interests are broadly in development economics, health economics, quantitative methods, and applied demography. His research utilizes experimental and non-experimental methods to investigate the relationships between population, health, and economic development in low- and middle-income countries.
