Pardee Graduate Students Take Fifth Annual Spring D.C. Trip

Graduate students and faculty from the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University took the fifth annual spring trip to Washington D.C. from March 8-11, 2020 to visit think tanks, non-governmental-organizations, government departments and meet with high-level policy makers and practitioners of international affairs. Students were accompanied on the trip by Associate Dean for Studies and Professor of the Practice of International Relations Amb. Robert Loftis.

The trip included visits to:

  • The United States Institute of Peace (USIP)
  • Capitol Hill for meetings with Congressional Staff
  • Center for Global Development (CGD)
  • The RAND Corporation
  • Pentagon, the U.S. Department of Defense
  • The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS)
  • U.S. Department of the Treasury
  • U.S. Department of State
  • The Embassy of Chile
  • Akin Gump Strauss Hauser & Feld

Most of the visits were arranged by and included meetings with Pardee School alums, including Heino Klinck (Pardee ’88; Pardee ’89), now Deputy assistant Secretary of Defense for East Asia; Colin Cookman (Pardee ’05 and Hope Kasha’s (Pardee ’13), both now at USIP;Leah Nodvin (Pardee ’13), now on Congressional staff; Jan Gleiman (Pardee ’94), now at the U.S. Department of Defense; Thomas Jennings (Pardee ’87) and Sarah Wicks (Pardee ’07), both at the U.S. Department of the Treasury now; Ameliah Croft (Pardee ’12), now at the U.S. Department of State; Sutton MacQueen (Pardee ’19), now at CGD; and Nikos Tsafos (Pardee ’03) and Gabriel Coll (Pardee ’13), both now at CSIS, and Bill Cocolis (Pardee ’93), now at AGSHF, and others.

The trip included visits to the U.S. Department of State, U.S. Institute of Peace, Massachusetts Congressman Bill Keating’s office on Capitol Hill, Center for Global Development, Office of Foreign Assets Control, Center for Strategic and International Studies, Embassy of Chile, Pentagon, and RAND Corporation.

Pardee graduate students also had the opportunity to network with Boston University and Pardee School alumni based in the D.C.-area at a reception and panel hosted by Pardee School Dean’s Advisory Board member Paul Nathanson (Pardee ’85). Apart from Nathanson, the panel included Pardee School alums Bonnie Pierce (Pardee ’94) who is a Visiting Professor of International Business at George Washington University and also a member of the Pardee School Dean’s Advisory Board, and also Kristin Bruno (Pardee ’19) who is a Senior Associate at the Pew Charitable Trusts. The reception were held at Bracewell, LLP where Nathanson is a partner and leads the strategic communications practice.

The goal of the trip to Washington is to enable Pardee School students to get a better understanding of career and practice options available to those pursuing higher education in global affairs.
