Shifrinson Writes in and Edits Special Issue of International Politics
Joshua Shifrinson, Assistant Professor of International Relations at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, authored two articles evaluating the legacy of NATO enlargement in the June 2020 issue of International Politics. Shifrinson also edited the special issue of the research journal on NATO.
The special issue is the first systematic study of how NATO expansion has affected U.S., European, Russian, and organizational (i.e., NATO) politics, and brings together the work of an an international and interdisciplinary group of scholars.
When asked to comment on the publication, Shifrinson stated:
The pieces in this special issue reflect a sustained effort by a leading group of scholars to really grapple with the legacy of NATO enlargement nearly three decades after the process began. My own pieces help frame the scholarly and policy debates surrounding expansion, and — drawing on my work IR theory and diplomatic history — analyze why NATO expansion has occupied such a major place in U.S. strategy since the Cold War.

A research launch event is tentatively planned for fall 2020.
