Najam Discusses Pakistan’s Role in China-India Border Confrontation
Adil Najam, Dean of the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, was quoted in an Express Tribune article on a recent China-India border confrontation in Kashmir and how this has escalated regional tensions.
The article discusses India’s annexation of Kashmir, how this has forced China to become more involved in the region, and Pakistan’s policy towards the confrontation. Pakistan – who, along with India, have staked claim to the entire Kashmir region – has said they view the violent incident at the border as a bilateral issue between China and India, hoping to avoid involvement and de-escalate the situation. Najam argues that this is the best response as Pakistan should not be speaking on behalf of Kashmir.
An excerpt:
Speaking at a virtual conference by the Corporate Pakistan Group, Dr. Adil Najam argued that ‘the best thing Pakistan can do is to not make this about Pakistan. This is about Kashmir. Pakistan doesn’t have the international credibility to speak on their behalf. Kashmiris do because of 70 years of real struggle and commitment.’
