Najam Interviewed on Israel, Bahrain, UAE Bilateral Agreements

Adil Najam, Dean of the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, was interviewed on Dunya News’ “Dunya Kamran Khan Kay Sath” on September 15, 2020, where he discussed the recent bilateral agreement between Israel, the United Arab Emerates (UAE), and Bahrain to normalize relations.

During the interview, Najam discussed Bahrain’s peace accord with Israel, which follows the UAE’s own agreement only a few weeks ago. In his remarks, Najam called what we are seeing now as a “testing of the waters” by smaller allies of Saudi Arabia, which has yet to recognize Israel. While it has yet to do so, Najam said that Saudi Arabia is trying to gauge the response of other Gulf nations before acting, especially now that two countries have blazed the path to normalized relations.

Najam also noted that this new agreement has not caused widespread change in the attitudes of other Arab state. While there has not been a large outcry of support in the streets of Arab nations, he emphasized that there has not been violent opposition either, which is a promising sign.
