Schmidt Presents  Europe’s Crisis of Legitimacy at Two Book Talks

Vivien SchmidtJean Monnet Professor of European Integration and Professor of International Relations and Political Science at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, presented her latest book –  Europe’s Crisis of Legitimacy: Governing by Rules and Ruling by Numbers in the Eurozone – during two recent book talks hosted by the Jacques Delors Centre and the London School of Economics and Political Science. 

The Jacques Delors Centre event – hosted on November 17, 2020 – was part of the “Future of Europe lecture series” for which the Jacques Delors Centre invites renowned scholars and intellectuals to debate and share insights into their research. In the series’ third installment, Schmidt spoke on “The Euro and the Future of European Democracy.” In her presentation, Schmidt analyzed the deficiencies of Eurozone governance from a perspective of democratic theory and explored ways to remedy the EU’s problems of legitimacy, reinvigorate its national democracies, and rethink its future.

During the London School of Economics and Political Science event – hosted on November 18, 2020 – Schmidt discussed European democracy and legitimacy, it’s split-level nature in the European Union (EU), and the processes of Eurozone governance that led to deteriorating economic performance and the rise of populism.

Vivien Schmidt is Professor of International Relations and Jean Monnet Professor of European Integration at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies and was the first Director of BU’s Center for the Study of Europe, housed at the Pardee School. Schmidt’s research focuses on European political economy, institutions, democracy, and political theory—in particular on the importance of ideas and discourse in political analysis.
