Heine Quoted in Article on Digital Economic Partnership Agreement

Ambassador Jorge Heine, Research Professor at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, was quoted in a Voice of America article on the Digital Economic Partnership Agreement (DEPA), a new international economic and trade organization focused on digital issues such as artificial intelligence (AI).

The article, titled “Smaller Economies See Big Opportunities in Digital Trade Pact,” discusses the appeal of DEPA and multiple countries’ recent interest to join signatories Chile, New Zealand, and Singapore. DEPA appears attractive to global economies due to all members being relatively equal in power, meaning no single member has dominated relations so far.

Heine says that DEPA “helps to fill a need made more urgent by the coronavirus pandemic, which ‘has accelerated the demand for digital services, both domestically and internationally.’” He goes on to say that the organization is working to establish common rules related to the new era of e-commerce and data-centric trade, which is much needed.
