Najam Interviewed on U.S. Exit from Afghanistan

Adil Najam, Dean of the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, appeared on News 24 and Dawn News to discuss the United States’ planned withdrawal from Afghanistan.

In both appearances, Najam discusses the implications of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, which President Joe Biden announced would take place before September 11, 2021. Projections show that this timeline might be hastened and American troops could be out of the country prior to the initial deadline.

Najam noted that there has been an escalation in conflict following Biden’s announcements. He suggested that an increase in anarchy and chaos is almost guaranteed because the U.S. is leaving Afghanistan without resolving the balance of power issue. Najam added that there is a scramble for power in Kabul that is trying to fill the oncoming vacuum that will be left by the military withdrawal. Unfortunately, the U.S. should be ready to assist the conflicting parties in Kabul so they can ultimately reach a settlement.
