Heine Discusses Foreign Investments in Latin America
Ambassador Jorge Heine, Research Professor at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, was quoted in a Voice of America article breaking down China’s expanding foreign investments in Latin America and how this might shift regional favor away from the United States.
The article, titled “Quietly Vying with US, China Boosts Trade, Investments in Latin America,” explores China’s ever-growing pool of foreign investments in parts of Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Citing research from the BU Global Development Policy Center (GDP Center), the article states that China’s growing investments in Latin America – particularly in food, oil, and minerals – do not pose an immediate threat to traditional investors in the region. Heine echos the research findings stating how China has quickly become a top source of foreign capital in the region growing from $16 billion in 2000 to more than $400 billion today.
