GDP Center Launches National Climate Funds Tracker
On November 8, 2021, the Global Development Policy (GDP) Center, an affiliated regional center at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, launched the first-of-its-kind National Climate Funds (NCF) Tracker, an interactive identifying dedicated climate finance vehicles at the national level, capturing 46 NCFs in 39 countries.
The NCF Tracker identifies 46 funds across 39 countries, showing how these funds vary by host country, legal design, scope, mobilized finance, and the level of success in attracting resources from multilateral climate funds. The interactive also tracks whether NCFs work with multilateral climate funds, such as the Green Climate Fund (GCF) as implementing or executing entities. In all, the NCF Tracker provides the operating context for developing country actions on climate change.
An accompanying policy brief, titled “Accelerating Climate Action through National Climate Funds,” summarizes key findings and takeaways from the tracker as well as policy implications. The brief’s author – Rishikesh Ram Bhandary, Assistant Director at the GDP Center – notes, “As climate finance gets renewed political attention, decision-makers need to build on past experiences. Not only does the total volume of finance matter, how finance gets channeled to developing countries is also important. National climate funds are a critical part of the climate finance landscape and tracking their performance will help us understand how well our collective response to climate change is really working.”
