Najam Discusses Great Power Tensions Over Ukraine
Adil Najam, Dean of the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, was interviewed on Dawn News where he discussed the evolving standoff in Ukraine.
Najam was joined by the former foreign secretary of Pakistan to discuss the threat to Ukraine, the tensions between the United States and Russia over this matter, and how it all affects Eastern Europe. Najam is of the view that no one desires an actual military conflict, despite U.S.-Russian tensions being very real. He speculates that the two great powers are simply flexing their muscles and nothing will come of it; however, in doing so they are making not just Ukraine but the rest of Europe nervous.
Najam noted that both U.S. President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin are products of the Cold War. They are the only two world leaders who were entrenched in the geopolitics of that era, and he believes it is this shared heritage and Cold War calculations that are at the heart of the current situation of Ukraine.
