Ye Participates in Panel Exploring Foreign Policy of Great Powers

On February 15, 2022, Min Ye, Associate Professor of International Relations at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, participated in a Security in Context panel on the goals and consequences of U.S., Russian, and Chinese foreign policy.

The webinar, titled “Understanding U.S., Russian, and Chinese Foreign Policy,” was the first in a series of discussions convened by Secuirty in Context to explore the implications of multipolarity in 21st-century geopolitics on the global South. Joining Ye on the panel were Lee Jones, Professor Queen Mary University of London; Dave Lewis, Professor University of Exeter; and Michael Klare, Emeritus Professor Hampshire College. The event was moderated by Security in Context’s Omar Dahi.

Ye’s remarks offered insights into China’s foreign policy and how it interacts with other great powers. Drawing from a recent edition of the Journal of East Asian Studies that she co-edited, Ye noted that China has been adapting its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) into a more moderate version in response to pressure and criticism from the U.S. and partner countries. However, she said that China will continue on an aggressive growth path by focusing on three main aspects of its foreign policy: bolstering its military deterrence, establishing a bilateral sphere of influence, and expanding multilateral initiatives.
