Schilde Named Jean Monnet Chair in European Security and Defense

Kaija Schilde, Associate Professor of International Relations at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University and Acting Director at the Pardee School’s Center for the Study of Europe (CSE), has been named Jean Monnet Chair in European Security and Defense by the European Commission.

A Jean Monnet Chair is a teaching post with a specialization in European Union (EU) Studies. Based on a competitive selection process, the Commission awards the Chair to qualified professors who enhance the teaching of European Unions (EU) studies through their curriculum; conduct, monitor, and supervise research on EU matters at all education levels; be a mentor and advisor to the next generation of teachers and researchers; and provide expert guidance to future professionals about European matters.

As the Jean Monnet Chair in European Security and Defense, Schilde will further the Pardee School’s agenda of preparing students to meet the international challenges of the 21st century through a rigorous and sustained presentation of the EU as a global power with responsibilities over European security, international order, and global security. She will also expand the study of European Integration (past and future) and European foreign and security policy, opening up new dimensions of teaching and public discussion of the EU as a European, global, and human security actor.

“I am delighted to receive this recognition from the European Union and honored to continue the Jean Monnet Chair legacy at the Pardee School,” said Schilde. “The Jean Monnet Chair in European Security and Defense comes at an important time to recognize, understand, and study the role of the European Union as a global geopolitical actor and as a political entity that regulates, shapes, and determines internal, regional, and transnational security outcomes. I look forward to hosting this global conversation at the Pardee School over the next three years, and involving my students in all aspects of this timely issue.”

Kaija’s term as chair runs from January 2022 through December 2024. She will be the third Jean Monnet professor at BU following Vivien Schmidt, Professor of International Relations and Political Science at the Pardee School, and Daniela Caruso, Professor of Law at BU’s School of Law.
