Hare Describes How Putin’s Foreign Policy Has Alienated Allies

Ambassador Paul Hare, Senior Lecturer in International Relations at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, published a Smerconish op-ed on Russia’s foreign policy amid its invasion of Ukraine and how this has impacted many of its allies.

In the article, titled “How Putin Derailed China’s Dream and Betrayed His Allies,” Hare outlines how Russian President Vladimir Putin’s actions in Ukraine have alienated many of his allies and raised questions about their future relations. He argues that Putin’s motivation for invading Ukraine was a selfish one that did not account for his allies or their interests. As a result, Russia has negatively impacted its allies’ global development, infrastructure, and trade aspirations, particularly those of China.

An excerpt:

It is too soon to judge the impact of Putin’s war on his allies and world. It is hard to see any of those he calls friends being interested in a resurrection of the Soviet Union bloc. The bigger powers of the 21st century have vastly different visions of world diplomacy. Putin has shown – particularly to China – that he is obsessed at restoring Russian control over Ukraine even if it means threatening the interests and good will of his allies and friends.
