Garčević Leads Discussion on “Vera Dreams of the Sea” at Belmont World Film Festival
On May 9, 2022, Ambassador Vesko Garčević, Professor of the Practice of International Relations at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, led a discussion about the Kosovo film Vera Dreams of the Sea at the 2022 Belmont World Film Festival.
Belmont World Film (BWF) is a nonprofit corporation that creates cultural exchanges and understanding through the screening of the world’s top films followed by discussions led by expert speakers.
Vera Dreams of the Sea addresses the challenges that women living in a patrimonial society like Kosovo face. As part of the tradition, women often have to relinquish their inheritance rights in favor of male family members. Following a screening of the movie, Garčević moderated a discussion with film director Kaltrina Krasniqi. The two discussed the movie and the characters, but also women’s rights in the region and globally, the role of tradition and when/how it contributes to the gender inequality, the clash between urban and rural lifestyles, as well as the role of women as liberators (as depicted in the movie).
