Heine Breaks Down Challenges Facing Chilean President Gabriel Boric

Ambassador Jorge Heine, Research Professor at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, was recently featured in the Latin America Advisor, a publication of the Inter-American Dialogue, a Washington D.C. think tank.

Heine responded to the publication’s feature Q&A, which asked various experts about the current political situation in Chile; specifically, the publication asked for comment on Chilean President Gabriel Boric’s low approval ratings and how they may limit his ability to push his agenda forward. Heine noted that Boric always faced an uphill battle pushing a progressive agenda; however, he too was surprised by how quickly his ratings have dropped. Among the primary challenges facing Boric and his coalition is the upcoming plebiscite, which will decide if the Constitutional Convention will successfully put forth new constitutional text; if not, Heine says, “this would be a severe blow to the government, making it a lame duck after only six months in office.”
