Heine Co-Authors Journal Article on Active Non-Alignment
Jorge Heine, Research Professor at Boston University’s Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies, published an article in “Política Exterior” – a foreign policy journal based out of Madrid – on active non-alignment and its applicability in international relations today.
Heine co-authored the article, titled “The renewed validity of Active Non-Alignment,” with Carlos Fortin, and Carlos Ominami, the co-authors of his book Active Non-Alignment and Latin America: A Doctrine for the New Century. In their piece, the authors discuss the war in Ukraine and how it marks a turning point in international relations, one in which Western powers are drawing a clear line between democracies and autocracies. While the United States and many European countries have echoed this sentiment and condemned Russia‘s invasion of sovereign Ukraine, numerous Latin American countries have opted not to take sides in a conflict that has pitted “the West versus the Rest.” Heine argues that this situation shows how prevalent active non-alignment has become in global affairs; rather than get entangled in great power struggles, Latin American leaders have chosen not to choose sides, something Heine believes will allow them to focus on the issues plaguing their countries.
