Heine Interviewed on the Life and Career of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva

Jorge Heine, Research Professor at Boston University’s Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies, was interviewed for a Phoenix TV Hong Kong documentary on the life and trajectory of Brazilian President-elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

In his remarks, Heine discussed Lula’s political career from his role in helping form Brazil’s working party in the 1980s to his first successful presidential election in 2002. He went on to say that Lula gave Brazil a greater presence on the world stage during his government tenure, winning bids to host both the World Cup and the Olympics. In discussing Lula’s recent election, Heine notes that the President-elect faces a challenging time in a greatly divided country and world; he suggests that Brazil and Latin America as a whole adopt a strategy of “active non-alignment” in the ongoing great power conflicts.
