Heine Explores Prospect of Regional Integration in Latin America
Ambassador Jorge Heine, Research Professor at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, published a Clarín op-ed in which he discusses the revival of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) and the project of regional integration in Latin America.
In his article, titled “¿Sería fútil relanzar la Unasur? (Would it be useless to relaunch UNASUR?),” Heine argues that with the new political landscape in the region, it makes eminent sense to revive UNASUR, the regional entity that had fallen apart in recent years, as various governments left the organization. With the region struggling to emerge from what United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) has described as “the worst crisis in 120 years,” triggered by the pandemic and deepened by its mismanagement, a new opportunity is opening up for Latin America to promote greater connectivity and regional interaction.
